Police campaign to intimidate photographers

Completely ignoring the guidance given by Chief Constable Andrew Trotter ( Head of ACPO Media Advisory Group ) the police are now running a campaign encouraging the public to report  photographers and “let experienced officers decide what action to take”.

Experienced officers? Like the experienced officers who arrested a guy taking picture of Christmas celebrations in Accrington? Like the experienced officers at the G20 summit who beat Ian Tomlinson?

Older readers may remember the IRA campaign of bombing in the UK in the 80s. The IRA were far more successful in bombing England than the current batch of islamists yet the police then did not resort to inducing paranoia in the population and encouraging us all to fear and spy on each other.

The truth is that the natural inclination of anyone who joins an organisation such as the police force will be to govern human behaviour by restricting everything and then allowing action by exception. That is not in accord with democratic values. Democracy requires that everything is allowed unless it is specifically proscribed.

The trouble with this police campaign is it ramps up the pressure. The police claim they will only use power to counter terrorism but we already have evidence that police are using all sorts of excuses to harrass photographers from anti-social behaviour to suspected pedophilia. Those given powers over others always abuse those powers. It’s a rule.

As yet the United Kingdom is not a police state and we do not restrict public photography. We should not allow ourselves to be frightened into giving the police  authoritarian powers. Slippery slope and all that.

Arrested for photographing Accrington Christmas celebrations

This is amazing. A police community support officer tries to get the details of photographer Bob Patefield. Originally the police say this is because of the anti-terror legislation but when Mr. Patefield refuses to give his details as he rightly claims that he is not obliged to the police change their excuse to anti-social behaviour. Mr. Patefield was arrested and held for 8 hours before being released without charge.

This is straight intimidation of photographers.

Pictures from the Halley Research Station, Antarctica

The image below has just been received by our correspondent at The Halley Research Station in Antarctica. Good to see he’s not wasting his time on pointless scientific endeavours down there.

House Price Affordability

Market Oracle claim that the traditional method of calculating the affordability of housing is flawed. It seems that the usual method for calculating affordability is to take into account average earnings and house prices. The graph below represents this.

House price affordability - traditional measure

However, Market Oracle claim that it is necessary to factor in interest rates too and they have produced a graph which includes all three parameters.

They say that the reason that house prices continue to rise is because they are still affordable. They think that house prices are now at the upper limit of a range and so probably will not rise very fast and that it would take an interest rate of approximately to 6% to cause a significant drop in house prices.

Property prices – Will the fear return?

Last June I posted a link to a graph perporting to show the Lifecycle of a Bubble from the web site http://www.housepricecrash.co.uk. I think that back then average UK house prices were descending from their all time high . I just checked out a graph of average house prices in the UK on the same web site and we seem to be following the lifecycle fairly well. We seem to have been down into the “Bull Trap” and are now rising into the “return to normal”.

Now we approach the critical time. Are we really returning to Normal or will we follow the lifecycle? Will Fear, Capitulation and Despair follow before we return to the mean. Hold onto your hats?!

Conniving gits deny any wrongdoing

Mr. Mandelson denies any wrongdoing, again, and again, and again....

Mr. Mandelson denies any wrongdoing, again, and again, and again....

I hear that a French judge has issued an “international” arrest warrant against Floyd Landis, an American cyclist, for suspected hacking into an anti-doping laboratory computer. Mr. Landis has “denied any wrong doing”. Perhaps Mr. Landis is completely innocent but I thought it worthwhile to provide a translation for those not familiar with the English language.

The phrase “denied any wrongdoing” has a special meaning in English which is in exact opposition to that which might be expected. The phrase is often used by politicians when they are caught committing some crime or misdemeanour. The meaning is this:

“I am a conniving git who is guilty as sin but I have not yet worked out my story. Specifically I have not yet worked out which details of my crime for which the authorities have acquired irrefutable evidence and for which, a specific denial, would catch me out. I am therefore making this bland general denial of everything in the desperate hope that the authorities have not got enough evidence to convict me and to play for time while my expensive legal advisers work out a way for me to bluff this out.”

Mr. Landis is not in good company. Some politicians who have hid behind this bollocks include:

Peter Mandelson denies any wrongdoing
Lord Levy denies any wrongdoing
Hazel Blears denies any wrongdoing
Tony Blair denies any wrongdoing
Harriet Harman denies any wrongdoing

When these people deny any wrong doing they are, of course, TALKING BOLLOCKS!
